Quality Assurance is a newly emerging awareness among Fortune 500 organizations of the imperative to compartmentalize quality assurance from other elements of the software development lifecycle – such as design and construction. The role of QA is to prevent and/or minimize the occurrence of defects across all functional areas – product, program, development, QA, user-ed and end-user.
Applications are built by programmers or developers typically in isolation – each developer working in an isolated application silo or unit. The real behavior of the application, however, manifests when it is integrated with other application components and across interfacing systems. It is only within the medium of QA that these circumstances and scenarios are validated.

For an application to function flawlessly in production, testing must be performed in an environment that simulates the production environment (e.g., number of users, infrastructure, usage pattern, data, boundary conditions). QA is the only group that is appropriately focused to fulfill these objectives.
